Four-Ingredient Lip Balm

Beeswax, shea butter, sweet almond oil, a drop of honey. Ten minutes start to finish, makes six tins, and lasts about six months. The first thing most people make when they start with natural beauty — because it works first time and feels like a small triumph.

Method

  1. Set up a bain-marie. Bring a small pan of water to a gentle simmer. Place a heatproof glass or metal bowl over the top — the bottom of the bowl shouldn't touch the water.
  2. Melt the wax and butter. Add the beeswax pellets and shea butter to the bowl. Stir occasionally with a spoon. They'll take about 5 minutes to fully liquefy.
  3. Add the sweet almond oil. Pour it in once the wax is completely melted. Stir until smooth and uniform.
  4. Take off the heat. Remove the bowl from the pan. Working quickly, stir in the honey and the vitamin E oil if using. Don't dawdle — the mixture starts to thicken within a minute.
  5. Pour into the tins. Fill each tin almost to the top — the balm will shrink slightly as it cools. Leave the tins undisturbed on a flat surface for 30 minutes, then seal.
Beauty Tip

Want a tinted version? Add a quarter teaspoon of beetroot powder when you add the almond oil. The colour deposit on lips is subtle but lovely. Cocoa powder works too for a warm brown tint.

Shelf life: 6 months at room temperature, longer in the fridge.

If the balm sets too hard, gently re-melt and add 10 ml more almond oil. If it's too soft, re-melt and add 5 g more beeswax.
