Winter Paw Balm

Road salt, grit, and frozen pavements crack and burn paw pads through the winter months — and salt is mildly toxic if a dog licks it off afterwards. This four-ingredient balm forms a thin protective barrier before walks and softens any cracking that's already there. All four ingredients are safe if licked, which is the most important rule of any pet skin product.

Method

  1. Set up a bain-marie. Bring a small pan of water to a low simmer. Place a heatproof glass or metal bowl over the top — it shouldn't touch the water below.
  2. Melt everything together. Add the beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil and olive oil to the bowl. Stir occasionally with a spoon. Everything should be fully melted and combined within about 8 minutes.
  3. Pour into the tins. Take the bowl off the heat. Carefully pour the warm liquid into the three tins, filling almost to the top. The mixture is loose at this stage and will solidify as it cools.
  4. Cool completely. Leave the tins undisturbed on a flat surface for at least an hour before sealing. They'll firm up to a soft, scoopable consistency.
  5. Apply. Rub a pea-sized amount onto each paw pad before walks. Massage it in gently — most dogs find this enjoyable. Reapply after swims or in heavy snow.
Pet Tip

If your dog has cracked or sore pads already, apply a slightly thicker layer at bedtime when they're settled. The balm has time to absorb overnight rather than getting licked off immediately.

Why each ingredient

Important

Do not add essential oils to a paw balm — many of them, including tea tree, eucalyptus and citrus, are toxic to dogs and can be fatal to cats even in small amounts. The four ingredients in this recipe are deliberately chosen because all of them are safe if licked off the paws (which they will be).

Shelf life: 12 months at room temperature.

The same balm works for cracked human heels — useful in the winter months. Make a double batch and keep one tin for yourself.
