Oatmeal Dog Shampoo

Most shop-bought dog shampoos contain sulphates and synthetic fragrances that strip the natural oils from a dog's coat and irritate sensitive skin over time. This oatmeal version is soap-free, genuinely gentle, and works especially well for dogs that scratch after bathing or have dry, flaky skin. The colloidal oats don't just soothe — they form a light protective coating on the skin that lasts well past the rinse.

Method

  1. Make the colloidal oats. Put the oats into a blender and process for about 2 minutes until you have a very fine, flour-like powder. Test it by rubbing a pinch between your fingers — it should feel silky smooth, not gritty. If it's still gritty, blend for another minute. Gritty oats won't dissolve and will clog your bottle.
  2. Dissolve in water. Whisk the oat powder into the warm water a little at a time until fully dissolved. The water will turn a pale milky colour — this is exactly right.
  3. Add the soap and oil. Pour in the castile soap and add the lavender drops. Stir gently — try not to create too much foam at this stage.
  4. Bottle it. Pour into your squeezy or pump bottle using a funnel if needed. Label it and store in the bathroom.
  5. Bathe your dog. Wet your dog thoroughly first. Apply a generous squeeze of shampoo, work through the coat down to the skin, and leave for a minute before rinsing. The rinse water will look milky — that's the oats doing their job. Rinse until the water runs clear.
Pet Tip

For dogs with very itchy skin, leave the lather on for 3–5 minutes before rinsing. The longer the oats are in contact with the skin, the more soothing effect you'll get. Use a warm, dry towel immediately after to avoid post-bath shivering.

Why each ingredient

Important

Do not substitute the lavender for tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint or citrus oils — these are toxic to dogs. Lavender at 5 drops per 350 ml is within safe limits for dogs over 5 kg. For very small dogs or puppies, leave the essential oil out entirely and use plain castile soap and oats only.

Shelf life: 3 weeks in the bathroom. The oats will settle between uses — shake the bottle each time before applying.

This shampoo also works well for cats, but omit the lavender oil entirely — cats are highly sensitive to essential oils and even small amounts can cause harm.
